Drums and more...
|
From: Mark
I'd like to ask Kevin how his drum sound has changed over the years.
specifically how on lots of bauhaus -era work he had the muffled,
deadened sound stereotypical of the 70's. How did he accomplish this
sound? Was it for studio use only, or did he muffle his drums as heavily
live as well. If it is possible I'd also like know what type of drums,
heads, and cymbals he uses currently.
Well, the answer may surprise you a little! Due to a mixture of
poor drumkit and lack of tuning knowledge, I would apply huge amounts
of gaffa tape to the heads! This would of course eliminate any nasty
ringing and produced that dead, dead sound. This technique was applied
to both studio and live use. It was not until Steven Perkins introduced
me to the wonderful world of DW drums that I really appreciated what
a great kit could sound like. I now have a better knowledge of tuning
and really enjoy playing my DW kit without so much as a sliver of
gaffa tape! My favourite cymbals have always been Zildjian and for
heads I use Remo Weather King.

Glenn Campling and drum lessons
|
From:
Jeffrey
Here's a question for Kevin: Whatever happened to Glenn Campling since
the demise of Tones On Tail?
Glenn took up a successful career in graphic design. I believe
that he is still involved with music, but to what capacity I'm not
sure.
From: Jay and Laura
Kevin,
I was thinking about taking drum lessons. At 26 do you think it's
too late to learn how? As a child I took piano lessons for a year
or two and as an adolescent I wanted to take drum lessons. My parents
didn't seem to share my enthusiasm :( I think my mom thought that
piano was more "lady like". What are your thoughts?
P.S. I have this theory that if most children had their druthers the
clarinet and oboe would become obsolete!
It's never too late! Of course it is always best to learn most things
when a child. I certainly find the discipline involved with learning
new things now is difficult to maintain! I suggest that you give it
a try and see how it goes. You don't have much to lose. So, I wish
you the best of luck and if you turn in to the next Gene Krupa, then
please send me a copy of your first recording!

Tones on Tail live
|
From: Abel
HI Kevin! Once again Abel From barcelona, Spain.
Now talking about tones on tail.
I got "Night music" (nice cover ;-) ). As I said about Love
and Rockets (I forgot to name the band in my last question), is there
any live recording apart from heartbreak hotel? that whole cd is a
really eclectic recording, even pointing things other people are rescuing
at another level in these last years (in some moments I kind of see
the cheapest Marilyn Manson singing Glam... Oh Gosh Manson has no
class besides this CD) and, I'm a really Fanatic of Live recordings...
Isn't there any real chance of releasing or even finding something?
Dear
Abel,
Sorry to disappoint you but I do not know of any other live recordings
of Tones On Tail. That doesn't necessarily mean that there are none.
Good luck in your search, and please let me know if you come across
any!

Even more Love and Rockets live & Nerves
|
From: Abel
hi Kevin, this is Abel From Barcelona, Spain.
Talking about Live releases, Is there any chance for you to release
anything of your last tour [Love and Rockets]???
I may be rare, maybe some people are looking for old stuff but, your
last album have brilliant moments and I want to know about how you
"carried" that... ART to your concerts. I was told about
some possible release of your last concerts but, I know they got stolen...
Anyway, is there any chance?
Dear Abel,
Unfortunately the only recordings that we made were the last shows
at The Roxy. Following my recent appeal for the tapes to be returned,
Beggars Banquet received an email from a gentleman who wrote this:
"Around a year ago, there was a gentleman in southern california
who was advertising on ebay that he was the recording engineer and
that he had "soundboard recordings of Love and Rockets final
show." i e-mailed the old Love and Rockets site per this
information and i never heard a response. figuring that they had been
recovered, i put the information away."
If anyone reading this has any information in respect of this Ebay
posting please contact us.
By the way It goes without saying that our real sound engineer would
never pull a stunt like this!
From: Patrick
Kevin,
With all the talk about a possible future live release, I have a long-lost
gig that I would wish to inquire about. If it comes down to a question
of best shows ever, please look at the Salt Lake City gig at DV8 from
June 1996. The scene was set perfectly. It was a make up gig for the
one in April the band missed due to the bus crash. It was also the
last "proper" L&R gig of the tour.
While I was in line outside, I ran into a member of your crew who
asked people if they had a recording camera on them. As he was baffled
that no one was taping the show, he announced to a few people that
if anyone could video tape the show and send the master to the record
company, they would then recieve a copy as long as they promised they
would never copy and trade it. I told him I would run to a store and
purchase a camera. He laughed at me because it was a Sunday night
in Utah. Five minutes later some guy showed up with a camera and he
was the chosen one.
Needless to say that person lived up to their promise. Not only was
Love and Rockets perfectly tight that gig, you also did great versions
of Rock On and Tomorrow Never Knows. And the night was completed with
Slice of Life and King Volcano.
Thank you for reading this and like I said, if you come across this
show,
consider using it for your live CD and DVD.
PS...do the guys from the band still support Manchester United?
This is all news to me! I will ask the other chaps if they are aware
of this, but I wouldn't hold out too much hope. Regarding Manchester
United, yes David and myself are still avid supporters!
From: Anthony
& Cherie
Just a small question - about Bauhaus & not current projects I'm
afraid - the piano on Flat Fields "Nerves" is fantastically
demented. Who's responsible!?
PS: Bauhaus made amazing music (Anthony curses the year he was born
- too late!). You are up there on the highest pedestal with Joy Division
and Coil. We are yet to explore your post-Bauhaus works. Looking forward
to it!
Dear Anthony and Cherie,
Well, I have been waiting for one of the others to pick this question
up but that hasn't happened. The reason for my reluctance is that
I'm partly unsure of my memory on this one! As far as I can remember,
it would probably have been Peter and David playing the keys and Danny
and Myself making the noises! I can recall scraping broken bottles
and shards of metal across the strings inside the piano to create
these noises! I'm sure that Steinway would have been squirming in
his grave, had he witnessed this sacrilegious occurrence!

more Love and Rockets live
|
From: Kevin McHale
Talking of L.A.R. live...any chance of an audio release of the London
Dominion gig from 1988? This was an awesome show, and very special
for us UK fans for whom this was the last time Love And Rockets played
the UK. Beggars were going to release a video of the concert, but
apparently the footage was too dark, yet perhaps the audio recording
is okay?
I have made inquiries to Beggars Banquet and it seems that they have
been thinking along the same lines. They have many ideas for future
releases, one of which will be a live CD, probably the Dominion show!
As we speak (or type)! Andy Brooksbank is busily putting together
suggestions for a best of. There are also plans for a rarities CD
and DVD releases. But don't hold your breath as these projects will
probably take one or two years to unfold.

Love and Rockets live
|
From: Michael Spitale
Any chance of any live recordings from over the years ever being released?
If I could hear songs like Yin & Yang and Mirror People live
once again the world would be a little better place to live.
Thank you Michael. I guess that there is definitely room and time
for a Love and Rockets live CD. Of course you may know that someone
stole the tapes from our last shows that we recorded at The Roxy,
so it's not as though we were overlooking the idea! I may as well
make another but probably futile request to have them returned. If
anyone knows of their whereabouts, please have them mailed to Beggars
Banquet Records......no questions asked. Between the three of
us we probably have some old dats lying about that could contain some
interesting material. When we have our next rainy day I'll get on
it!

Messy recordings
|
From: Ryan Higgins
Kevin,
Here's two quick, short questions:
Any word on the release of the Messy album?
What about working with Pat Fish/Jazz Butcher Conspiracy, either on
an album or a tour?
In respect to the Messy album we have no plans at the moment to
release one. We are focusing on scoring and composing and we expect
that our releases will mainly fall along the lines of soundtracks.
We do have a collection of instrumental tracks that may be released
to coincide with a game release this summer. We are however planning
to release a 12" dance record possibly in April and there are
plans for a gig to coincide with this. Details will be posted on the
news page as they become available. In respect to The Jazz Butcher,
there are no plans to work with him at the moment. I must say though
that I had so much fun doing those few dates with them. Those chaps
are really "salt of the earth"!

Bauhaus imagery
|
From: Jessika
This first question is directed towards all four Bauhaus members,
so whoever wishes to respond...
The four of you obviously payed tribute to the Bauhaus School of Art
by naming yourselves after them. Being an artist myself, I am curious
to know if you applied the Bauhaus ideologies and methods to your
everyday life, and if you still apply this fusion of form and function
today.
We predominately liked the sound and the look of the name. We were
also fans of the bauhaus school of art and along with surrealism and
dada, utilized their imagery in early flyers that we made. We did
not conciously make music influenced by the bauhaus school of art,
however when we had a finished piece of music we could sometimes see
an influence in there.

Note from New York
|
When I first started to rehearse for this tour, I was pleasantly reminded
as to how well Peter's songs are crafted and to the deep beauty of
his lyrics. Tonight in New York, these qualities, along with his formidable
stage presence and captivating vocal delivery, could not have been
more apparent. It also struck me as to how very fortunate I am to
be playing alongside such an engaging bunch of traveling minstrels!
There is Peter DiStefano with his midi guitar versatility and powerchord
virtuosity, reeling and swerving around the stage like some deranged
whirling dervish! Eric Avery who can drive a song along with the power
of a runaway locomotive and then swoon you with his delicate, sexy
finger work! Last but not least is my partner in Messy, Doug DeAngelis.
In pre production, Doug's amazing talent in programming and bringing
the songs in to the year 2000, laid the foundation for all of us to
work over. Couple that with his incredible live finger work that leaves
you wondering whether or not he's just sprouted ten more pairs of
hands, then you realize that your working with one of the best! Aside
from the pure pleasure of playing with these guys, I have forged new
friendships and cemented those already there. Lastly, my hat goes
off to our excellent crew. The unsung heroes, whom without their hardwork
and talents, the shows would simply not be possible. A BIG thanks
to everyone on the tour, all of those who came to look and listen,
and to my good young friend Peter for the invitation!

A messy announcment from Kevin
|
Kevin and Doug, working together as Messy and assisted by John Houllahan,
have recently completed a remix for the boy band parody, "2gether".
2gether is the first ever MTV movie and is the story of the boy band
singing sensations and their lovable manager, Bob Buss. It is a very
funny, Spinal Tap style mockumentary and judging from the CD sales
of 60,000 units in the first two weeks, is going to be huge. The remix
is called, "Dreammaker" and can be found on the CD, details of which
can be found on the MTV
site.
They have a track entitled, "Shock" on mp3.com
which is in the Game Music category and a track entitled, " I See
Through It" in the Electronica category. To get a taste of Messy music
please visit mp3.com
and take a listen.
Messy are beginning a new project next week in order to record their
first full release. This project will involve many notable musicians
and DJ's in a very interesting concept!
If you wish to see Kevin and Doug performing 2gether they can be seen
on stage playing with Peter Murphy on his Wild Birds Tour 2000. Keep
checking back for more Messy news as they are working on a very interesting
project, details of which to follow.........

oh no! I have formed an electronic dance and soundscape entity known
as MESSY. My partner in crime is Doug DeAngelis, who you may know

Lift. Doug has an impressive background, having programmed, produced

Pyschotica, Tom Tom Club, New Order, Janet Jackson and Nenah Cherry.
Our first piece of work entitled, SHOCK has just been licenced to
Playstation's Jet Moto 4 game and this track will be available on

Questions from Andy Brooksbank, author of Beneath the Mask
and some more answers....
|
|
(In regards
to the UK tour) England was a 'No-No' at one stage - what changed
your mind? Were you pleased with the response from the UK?
What
changed our mind was the amount of interest and considering that
that was where it all started. I'm glad that we played in England
for many reasons and the audiences and performances were some of
the best on the whole tour.
How many
tracks did you record (as Bauhaus) in 98?
We
recorded only one song, Severance.
The future
of Bauhaus as a recording/touring unit? Does it have one?
There are no plans right now, although it's always a possibility.
Do you
ever or have you ever felt the need to move into other areas?
Yes! Fame does not hold much interest for me and I do prefer
to remain in the background.
What
do you consider to be the highest point of your career so far and
why?
Nico spontaneously joining Bauhaus on stage in Manchester to
perform 'Waiting for the Man'. Finding Iggy Pop in our seedy hotel
bar in New York and having a few drinks with him. Playing on the
Top of the Pops which as a kid was an unattainable dream, Hearing
our Peel Session as Bauhaus all crowded round a little transistor
radio, Holding a copy of Bela in my hands for the first time-this
was it, our first record! Performing on Porpoise Head with Porno
for Pyros. Having a No. 3 hit in America. All the great bands that
toured with us. There really are so many more high points than just
these and there have also been a lot of low points, but all in all
from the very start of Bauhaus to the present day, it has generally
been a very enriching and wonderful experience, and one that I count
myself lucky to have experienced every day.

It's a Question of Whom

|
|
Frequently Asked Questions:
Who did
you give your first Valentine to?
My Mum. (I was six at the time!)
When, where, how, why will there be the live album of the Resurrection
Tour?
Yes, Danny has just finished mixing it and it should be out by
summer.
Is there, will there be, when will there be the live video of the
Resurrection Tour?
There is a live video and hopefully will
be out by summer also.
When/If/How/Why/When/What/Where ....will there be a new Bauhaus
studio album?
It's always a possibility.
When will, where will the next Bauhaus tour happen? (and when will
you be coming to Australia, Japan, Austin, Brazil, Chicago..etc)
We have no idea!!!
Your Questions:
Do
you ever consider your role as a drummer as being like a magical
shaman, summoning tribal spirits? (from Chandra)
I wouldn't go that far! Although when I am playing or listening
to trance like drumming as in Yin and Yang The Flowerpot Man, or
techno trance music then I do get carried away to another place
and it becomes more of a spiritual experience. There is definitely
a global link with drumming that reconnects us with our deeper selves.
How
would you describe the band's shared aesthetic and relationship
as musicians? (also from Chandra)
I would say that we are definitely all individuals and have very
individual qualities although that there is a place where we all
meet and that is Bauhaus. I now know from experience that the chemistry
that we have is extremely special and I feel very blessed to be
part of this band.
What painter would you want to paint your portrait? (and yet again,
Chandra)
Van Gogh
Who penned the line "one couple questioned, the others discharged"?
(from Duncan Brown)
The lyrics to Terror Couple Kill Colonel were taken from a newspaper
article about a couple living in West Germany who killed a Colonel!!!
Who
is that snoring at the end of the song 'Exquisite Corpse'? (from
Daren Taylor)
That
is Derek Tompkins who was our co-producer and guru. He would often
fall asleep late at night as he was much older than us, and so we
decided to record him. The next day he couldn't believe that it
was him making such a dreadful noise!
Who were some of your inspirations as a starting drummer? (also
from Daren Taylor)
\Ringo
Starr, Kenny Jones, the drummer from The Attractions- Pete Thomas?
Budgie, Topper Headon, just to name a few.
I have always wondered about that extra bit at the end of the album
'The Sky's Gone Out' It starts off with something like 'my baby..you'll
be going to school..I wish you could be my baby all the time...I
wonder what the future holds' and sounds like an elderly English
gentleman talking to his child/grandchild? WHAT is the story behind
that? (yet again from Daren Taylor)
That is Derek Tompkins who was our co-producer. It was apparently
a spoken piece on a record from his childhood, which at the time
of recording the album, he could not get out of his head. So to
exorcise it, he felt it might work to go and record it to tape,
little did he know that as he was doing it we were conspiring to
put it on the end of the record.
What are your favorite books? (from AprilR)
The Dice Man. High Fidelity. Anything by Iain Banks. Every Autobiography!
and lots of books.s
!
